TLDR: The Great British Baking Show Cake Lifter is the KitchenCraft (now Sweetly Does It) Stainless Steel Cake Lifter (Amazon - UK).

What The Bakers Use

KitchenCraft (now Sweetly Does It) Stainless Steel Cake Lifter(Amazon - UK)

When the bakers have massive tiered cakes, or even just need to transfer their cakes from one place to another they're often seen using, what looks like, giant spatulas. These are cake lifters, not to be confused with peels used for getting pizzas and breads in and out of ovens. The Great British Baking Show cake lifters are KitchenCraft (now Sweetly Does It) Stainless Steel Cake Lifter (Amazon - UK).

The cake lifters are 10 inches (25 cm) in diameter with a short stout handle. The short handle is good for keeping the bulk of the weight of the cakes near the bakers' hands. This allows for good control, as opposed to using a peel which would be fairly unwieldy.

The KitchenCraft (now Sweetly Does It) Stainless Steel Cake Lifter(Amazon - UK) is stainless steel with a plastic handle. The steel is fairly thick, which keeps the lifter from feeling - or more importantly - being flimsy. Having the cake drop while you're moving it would be disastrous.

Because the handle is plastic, and the body stainless steel, it is completely dishwasher safe. Being made by KitchenCraft it also comes with a 12 month guarantee which should give you a piece of mind, but also slightly attests to its quality. Although, Tommy Boy may have something to say about that.

Why Sweetly Does It?

If you've read any bit of this blog before, welcome back, and I'm sure you're now familiar with KitchenCraft. If you're new here, welcome, and lets look at yet another subsidiary of KitchenCraft.

Sweetly Does It is the KitchenCraft subsidiary totally concerned with making, decorating, and serving cakes. Thus they have everything from pans and tins, to nozzles, decorative stamps, and finishing tools.

Pre-Sweetly Does It, KitchenCraft released all of the Sweetly Does It equipment under the KitchenCraft brand. Thus on The Great British Baking Show you'll see some of the cake lifters, and spatulas, and other cake making tools adorned with "Kitchen Craft." In the same episode you'll then see another baker using the same tool branded "Sweetly Does It."

The nicest thing about the Sweetly Does It branding, is it allowed KitchenCraft to expand their distribution. This includes both Amazon and Walmart in the US. I mean look at this unicorn cake tin! Oh hey! It's on Amazon too! (UK). Though, Walmart will list Sweetly Does It branded things as "KitchenCraft Sweetly Does It."

Where to get it?

If you're in the UK (cheers!) you've had access to KitchenCraft forever. Well as long as you've been alive! It's easily available at retail shops as well as online. If you're in the USA, you've been out of luck for a long time.

However, KitchenCraft has started to expand its global reach, not with just number of countries served, but with an ever expanding offering. Sweetly Does It exemplifies this, with their distribution at both walmart and Amazon.

If you're looking to get your hands on The Great British Baking Show's KitchenCraft (now Sweetly Does It) Stainless Steel Cake Lifter(Amazon - UK) - Amazon is probably the easiest route.

Interestingly enough, Amazon offers another nearly identical cake lifter. The RSVP International Endurance Stainless Steel Oven Spatula, 10" is identical minus the branding. Note the rivets connecting the work surface to the handle and "Taiwan" molded into the top of the handle. I have a feeling this is the same product from the same factory with different lettering. Its roughly 33% cheaper and has free prime shipping... but if buying the imposter(?) is not your thing, go with the Sweetly Does It model.

If the fairly cheap looking handle on the cake lifter is not your thing - Nordic Ware offers another nice cake lifter. It's body is stainless steel, there are no rivets (which could pose long term problems), and has a nice looking wooden handle. However, with most nice things for the kitchen, it needs to be hand washed.

Nordic Ware also makes a cake lifter with a plastic handle and an anodized aluminum over steel body. This is not just uglier, but also needs to be hand washed as well. So worst of both worlds. I refuse to post links to it, but know this atrocity exists.

So if you're going for ultra-utilitarian the Sweetly Does It is probably the way to go. If you're looking for a little more aesthetically pleasing, the Nordic Ware with a wooden handle is a good option, though you'll be hand washing things, which is never fun.
